What is often referred to as “Fort Weston” is actually two places merged into one. There is the actual Fort Weston, an outpost of the Lord’s Guards. There is also the the town that sprung up around the fort, Weston. The fort stands upon a hill overlooking the city, and the relationship between the two is best described as symbiosis. The fort provided protection from bandits and goblin raiders in the early days of the town, and the townsfolk ensured a steady steam of goods and services that made Fort Weston a plum assignment. Even as the western borders of Shard expanded and Fort Weston was no longer a “frontier fort”, the assignment was considered to be one of the better ones – a cushy one in some ways, well-suited for young officers starting their careers or officers in their last years before retirement.
In recent times, Weston was heavily damaged and Fort Weston besieged by goblin raiders, the first such attack in many long years. The goblins came in great numbers and were well-coordinated, unheard of in modern times. Despite the attackers’ ferocity, the vast majority of the villagers survived the attack and the Fort withstood a second assault before the raiders fled. Reinforcements from nearby Fort Valens ensured that it did not fall. The quick thinking of the fort’s commander and his lieutenants was officially commended by the Praetor of the Lord’s Guards himself.
